When selecting a Stand Up Paddle-Board there are a few things to keep in mind that will help you land the right piece of gear as it applies to Inflatable versus rigid options.
It is important to consider the following:
- Portability
- Storage
- Durability
- Performance
Portability: The inflatable SUP is the easiest board to get to your favorite paddle spot. It will pack down into a convenient carry bag or back pack and easily fit into your vehicle without using any type of rack system you would otherwise need for a rigid SUP. Inflatables Stand Up Paddle-Boards are also a terrific options when traveling.
*You will need to deflate and store the board prior to transport, and inflate once you arrive at your put in.
Storage: If you live in an apartment, condo or other scenario that doesn't afford you a lot of extra storage space an Inflatable SUP is a terrific solution to get you out on the water. When packed an inflatable easily fits into a closet. A rigid SUP requires a considerable amount of space when storing either in a garage or under a deck etc...
Durability: An inflatable board is much more durable that a rigid SUP. If you end of dropping an inflatable it will bounce, no scratches, holes or dings. The Durability of the inflatables make them a great option for families or for paddlers in rocky environments like the river.
Performance: Rigid boards are more efficient and responsive than inflatables since the boards don't flex as much. The rigid board gives you more glide per stroke and a more agile platform. A rigid board will be your best option if you plan on surfing, racing or paddling long distance.
An inflatable SUP provides a durable and portable solution that is easy to transport. They are excellent options for families and recreational paddlers. If you are looking for a board that is fast and or responsive, consider a rigid Stand Up Paddle-Board instead.
